Is homework mandatory in public schools? If so, can one refuse to have their child do it and not suffer grades?

Let me clarify, I am not telling my child not to do homework, and so far it has not be too much, I am curious about the laws regarding public schools and homework, that is all. I am not trying to deprive my kid of learning or doing work on his own, nor suggesting to him not to do it.

The best way to answer this question is to take it directly to the school board of your district. The district probably has some kind of policy in respect to homework. If you are looking to get your child out of doing their homework you need to know how to approach the board with valid reasons, so there are no problems for your child's grades.

Yes homework is a complete waste of time. Childhood doesn't last very long, it's sad that so much time is taken up with school work. I used to get lots of homework and it didn't make me a more intelligent person. I actually started to avoid going to school. I was eventually moved to a school that didn't give any homework and I became a much nicer person, less stressed, and less angry about the world in general. I'm now planning to go to university soon - which is something I definitely wouldn't have done if they had kept me in that constant state of annoyance during my teenage years. There is more to life than work. Equal time should be given to having fun. :-)

If it is mandatory then no the parent can not refuse to have their child take it without their grades suffering.

Luckily though if the school doesn't matchup to what you as a parent believe is best you can switch to another public or private school.
You can even opt to home-school your child.

I personally think that homework in public schools is wonderful. Because it teaches the kids to listen to their teachers while they are there. And I think it's a better test of how great the child's comprehension is.

And since College is that way its a great way for children to get used to and develop their comprehension skills.

Yes you have to do homework because if you didn't have it, most likely when it comes to the test the student probably didn't practice the certain skill by themself. Therefore, they wouldn't know what the answers were. Homework is needed but I DO believe it's needs to be in smaller quantities. I sometimes get 7 hours of homework in a night! For me, however, homework helps my grade!

I tell my students that homework is like practicing any sport. You cannot always just play and get better you have to practice off the field as well.
Unfortunately, with the way schools are organized, homework is mandatory. Teachers have to have written, verifiable records to show pricipals and parents proving that their student is learning. Your child's teacher is always being asked if his or her students are learning and there is not time or want from pricipals to prove it any other way then a gradebook and homework examples.
Let's be honest, many teachers assign too much homework. I had one teacher tell me that it helped because she didn't want to give everyone "A"'s in her math class.
If I were you, I would try coerce the teachers to limit homework, not eliminate it, becuase it will never, and can't happen.

It isn't mandatory for teachers to give out homework but if they do you have to do it. Otherwise it wouldn't be fair to the other kids

yeah, and you'll be setting them up for a great life later on...

try telling the boss that you "don't wanna" put in any extra effort, yet keep your cushy, high paying job.

why do parents insist on setting their children up for failure by allowing them to be lazy and only see the "here and now", not realizing that some tasks are training them for the adult life? when did all authority figures become the devil?

i weep for our future...

homework is necessary to the development of children's skills, especially in english in math. i suppose you could refuse to have your child do it and because of various lawsuits. of course, the school district would cave in and allow your child not to do homework. in this case, only one person would suffer...your child.
