Members

Akatsuki originally had ten members, but following the defection of Orochimaru they are currently at nine. Only one member, Sasori, has died, and Tobi, a former subordinate of the group, quickly assumed his position. Orochimaru, however, has yet to be replaced, despite his departure several years before the initial introduction of the group; this is either because Orochimaru took his supposedly irreplaceable Akatsuki ring with him when he left or they haven't found a worthy replacement. Given that Tobi was worthy enough to be accepted almost immediately after Sasori's death, the former would seem to be the case.

Though all of the members have been shown, two have yet to be named. The first has had some dialogue and been attributed to being the leader, while the identity of the other remains a complete mystery. In the anime, only Kisame and Itachi have been named, though Zetsu made an appearance at the end of the battle between Naruto and Sasuke.

Not much is known about this person except that he acts like the leader of Akatsuki; he is the only one to have given orders to other members and none have ever challenged or opposed him. He is also the one to initiate and supervise the jutsu that forcibly brings a biju out of a captured Jinchuriki.

Noone knows yet!!! Some think it's Yondiame Hokage. I personally think he's was a original team member of Yondiame old Team with Jiraiya, being Yondiame was the only member ever mentioned. There is a Fake page of Manga floating around, It's FAKE!!! The official Naruto fansite laid rest to that. Just give NARUTO 2 sometime, they will eventually solve the mystery for us.

nobody knows who the leader yet but all we know is that he/she has brown hair and it kind of sticks out in the back.

here are the members. each member wears a ring that they wear which shows where they are positioned on a hand statue that they use to extract the bijuu. i'm starting from the left thumb to the right thumb:

Akatsuki leader:

not much is known about this character except that he acts as the leader of the akatsuki. he is the only one who gives orders to the other members and none have ever challenged or opposed him. he is also the one who initiates and supervises the jutsu that forcibly brings out a bijuu out of a captured jinchuriki.

Deidara:

a fancy and skillful fighter, with special mouths on the palms of each of his hands, he is able to manipulate clay into many shapes. he uses a scope on his left eye to zoom in on objects when he is high in the air on his clay bird. he also seems to end most of his sentences with either un, yeah or hmm when he speaks.

uknown member:

aside from blue hair and some sort of object sticking out of his or her head, everything about this character remains a mystery.

Itachi Uchiha:

he graduated at the top of his academy at age 7, mastered the sharingan at age 8, became a chuunin at age 10 and previously an ANBU member at age 13. he left konoha about 5 years prior to the setting of naruto after slaying his whole clan except for his litte brother, sasuke uchiha. he was feared by orochimaru at age 11. orochimaru planned to use him as his next host but itachi became too powerful for him so he left the akatsuki and went after sasuke. after murdering his whole clan, itachi seemed to have become aloof and nearly emotionless. despite the murder of his clan, as well as his closest friend, Itachi does not appear to kill simply for the sake of it, but instead seems to use just enough force to achieve his goals.

Zetzu:

not much is known about him other than his alliegance with the akatsuki and his function as a spy. his head seems to be enveloped in a large venus fly trap. his pupiless eyes suggest that he might harbor something similar to the byakugan or ranmaru's kekkei genkai. he has the ability to emerge from the ground, trees and other plants allowing him to travel long distances fairly quickly. akatsuki members seemed to report zetzu as their superior, though perhaps only because he is often acting directly on the instructions of the leader.

former member Orochimaru:

the circumstances behind his eventual defection of the akatsuki remain unclear. he does state that he had planned to use itachi as his next host, but notes that itachi had become too powerful for him to handle which is why he turned his attention to sasuke. upon his leaving though, he kept his ring which is currently still on the severed body of his original body. the apparent special nature of his ring, his knowledge of their plans, and bad blood had led him to being the target of a number of akatsuki plots, one which involved a member of his retinue being a sleeper agent. orochimaru intends to eliminate the akatsuki as well but he is currently content to let konoha deal with the threat akatsuki poses. this is in the hope that they kill some of the remaining members for him.

Kisame:

he is known as the mysterious person of the hidden mist and a member of the seven swordsmen of the mist like zabuza and raiga who utilize large and unique swords. the amount of chakra kisame possesses appears to be very large, even by akatsuki's standard. kisame has displayed astonishing speed comparable to that of might guy, and incredible physical strength topped by the chakra-augmented strength of tsunade. depsite his rather brutish appearence, kisame speaks in a rather calm and polite manner compared to the other characters. he is also know to be respectful of itachi, seemingly aknowledging him as the stronger of the two and is so willing to do what he tells him to do. he also uses water-based jutsu in combination with his powerful physical attacks. kisame is the only other person to use suiton ninjutsu without a water source besides the second hokage.

Kazuzu:

kazuzu is incredibly greed-driven and will do almost anything to obtain money. he even refers himself as the treasurer of the akatsuki. given his friendly relationship with a bounty officer, it would seem he collects bouties rather frequently, seemingly doing so during his missions. he is shown to have a great amount of physical strength which is somehow associated with a change in his skin color.

Hidan:

this self-procaimed, slowest moving member of the akatsuki, wields a three-bladed scythe that he can use as a throwing weapon while retaining control of it with a thick rope that is wrapped around his wrist. he belongs to the jashin (evil god or evil heart) religion which commends slaughter and where anything less than total destruction is considered a sin. after a battle, he does a prayer ceramony, where he lies down on a seal and sticks a pike through his chest, during which his skin color changes for an unknown reason. hidan owns a charm with a upside down triangle inscribe inside a circle that he carries on a chain of beads which he uses to pray.

the next character was a former member of the akatsuki before he was killed by chiyo whom was his grandmother, and sakura so don't get confused over the last member there are really only nine members excluding orochimaru currently.

Sasori:

he is known as sasori of the red sand and he is the creator of kankuro's puppets. among others he is a genius pupeteer in his own right. his backround on his crimes are unknown at this point but flashbacks show his decent in darkness started when his parents died and he attempted to stimulate them by turning their corpses into puppets. during combat, sasori wears a few of his puppets and controls them from the inside, thus eliminating the pupeteer's weakness of being a separate and exposed target. his favorite puppet is hiruko which has a mechanical tail extending from the mouth of what appears to be a mask on his back, the left arm is something that appears to be a large studdes projectile, capable of firing shrapnel and the clearly artificial mouth opens to reveal a projectile-firing device. what makes him frightening is that he makes puppets out of human corpses as stated that he has a collection of 298 person puppets and one of the puppets being the body of the third kazekage and thus is able to retain some traits and jutsu while he was still alive.

Tobi:

formerly zetzu's subordinate, became a full member of akatsuki after sasori's demise. he now wears the same ring as sasori having recovered it after sasori's death. unlike the majority of ninja so far, tobi has not been shown wearing a visible forhead protector so his origin is unknown. tobi has a very formal and correct manner of speech. he also has an odd personality in comparison with other akatsuki members. while most members are serious, if not somewhat arguementative when alone, tobi is more carefree and goofy much like naruto. there are rumors that tobi's hidden identity may be actually that of obito uchiha (formerly kakashi's teamate from when he was a kid) who was supposedly dead. the reasons are that tobi's mask has only one eyehole, for his right eye. his left eye was cut out and given to kakashi before his supposed death. also, their names are similar (tobi is one letter short of obito and the missing "o" may be a reference to tobi's missing eye). his lighthearted personality also seems parallel to obito's.
