Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a flavorful herb that has been used in food and medicinal remedies for thousands of years. Also known as "sweet root," licorice root contains a compound that is roughly 50 times sweeter than sugar. Licorice root has been used in both Eastern and Western medicine to treat a variety of illnesses ranging from the common cold to liver disease. This herb has long been valued as a demulcent (soothing, coating agent) and continues to be used by professional herbalists today to relieve respiratory ailments (such as allergies, bronchitis, colds, sore throats, and tuberculosis), stomach problems (including, possibly, heartburn from reflux or some other cause and gastritis), inflammatory disorders, skin diseases, and liver problems.

You got a good answer from Imaka. I would caution that Licorice (American spelling) candy is made now with oil of Anise seed, specifically because the real Licorice root can cause hypertension in susceptible individuals, especially over a long period of use. You can buy DGL instead (de-glycerized Licorice) made into chewable wafers to take for stomach problems, without the danger of elevating blood pressure. Here it is manufactured by Now Foods and Enzymatic Therapy and is available at most natural foods stores.

Licorice is used in Chinese herbalism to balance combinations of herbs. It is used more than any other herb in China. Chinese licorice (glycyrrhiza uralensis) is much less likely to raise blood pressure than American licorice (glycyrrhiza glabra). They both have more medicinal properties than I want to type right now, but I use it in my work to strengthen the adrenal glands and normalize blood sugar in hypoglycemics. It is a very useful herb but shouldn't be used by people with high blood pressure or have a tendency to retain water.
