A primary is an election within one party, to determine who that party will nominate (support).

A closed primary is limited only to registered members of that party being allowed to vote. An open primary may also allow independents to vote, or it may allow anyone to vote, depending.

The general election is open to all registered voters, and is for the actual resulting seat or position.
