How old do I have to be to legally change my name? How do I do it? Is it cheap to get a court order for changing?

You have to be 18 to legally change your name.

You can "go by" any name you want, as long as you are not doing it for fraudulent purposes. My friends daughter legally has her last name, but she goes by her stepdad's last name, my nephew did the same thing.

If you want to legally change your name, you have to go before a judge, and give him/her good reason why. No idea how much it costs.

Do you realize that even when you change your name it your original name will still show up as an alias, or AKA name? You will never get rid of your original name completely.
Secondly, it is rather expensive to change your name. Depending on your area and state laws, the request has to go before a judge, and that is where the cost comes in. You have to pay an application fee, and filing fee and court cost. I don't believe you have to have a lawyer though. You can start at the local circuit clerks office for the information you need. The only way you can change your name and not deal with the old name, is to be in the witness protection program....and that isn't going to happen for you is it? LOL Good luck. Nana

I'm not sure of the age requirement but the process is pretty straight forward. All you need to do is contact your local county/city courthouse and inquire about the name change process. Basically all you need is a completed name change request form and a judge to sign it. I'm sure the fees for this service are different for each location but I would expect it to be under $50.

My brother got his middle name changed when he was 14 but my mom had to do it, so I guess you had to be 18. I believe it costs $1000.00, But now that I type it it seems really high

it depends on where you live. i'm over 18 but it only cost me a $50.00 filing fee and a visit to a local court house.
