I have a few suggestions. Enjoy!

First of all, Shannon Hale. She wrote The Goose Girl, Enna Burning, and an independant reader book called Princess Academy. But I suggest the first two books, which are young adult. Her third YA book, River Secrets, is coming out next month.

Next, Stephanie Meyer's books, Twilight and New Moon are great fantasy/romances. With vampires! They're amazingly written and will have you hooked right away.

Linda Joy Singleton is another great YA fantasy author. Look for the first book in her Seer series, Don't Die Dragonfly. It's about a psychic girl and her struggles trying to lead a normal life. Completely and utterly awesome.

Amelia Atwater Rhodes was only thirteen when she wrote her first book, In The Forests Of The Night. Now she has seven (?) books out and all are great.

Another great younger author is Christopher Paolini. He wrote Eragon, which is going to be the biggest winter movie this year, too. But the book is better.

Cobwebs by Karen Romano Young is just thrilling. It's a great alternative book to the chick lit stuff that's out there now.

And this might seem a little out of place, but I'm writing a fantasy novel and maybe you'd like to check it out? You can read the first few chapters at this website...

Enjoy the reading!

Robin McKinley has written some great YA fantasy books.

Shannon Hale is another great writer. I really enjoyed The Goose Girl.

Donna Jo Napoli and Jane Yolen are two other fantasy writers that come to mind.

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan and its sequel Sea of Monsters.

Stephenie Meyer is great too if you like vampires and/or werewolves. Twilight and New Moon are her two books.

Francesca Lia Block might also be one to consider. Her newest book is called Psyche in A Dress and definitely looks like a fantasy book.

There are a lot of good ones out there. The best one I've found was King Fortis the Brave by LaMontagne and Snyder. It's about a pair of twins that are pulled into a magical land where they find themselves caught in the middle of a battle for control of the realm. The boy twin, Rodney, is mistaken for King Fortis, an Arthur-like figure that is to someday return in the time of the land's greatest need. It's really a great book full of humor and adventure. I recommend it to my students all the time and have had students that really hate to read come back and tell me how much they love it.

How young are we talking aboutt? A good author is Madeleine L'Engle , she wrote "A Wrinkle In TIme" and won a Newberry Award award for it.

I read this in Junior High, or middle school as they call it now. But it is still being read, and she has written many others.
Without knowing an exact age, it is hard to make a recommendation.

Hi there. I'm the author of a new medieval fantasy series that you might like. The title of the first episode is THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY. It's 445 pages of action, adventure, magic, mystery and mayhem. If you like Conan, LOTR or Harry Potter type books, this is one you'll enjoy. In fact, one Hollywood producer said it was, "Like Braveheart meets Lord of the Rings." (See other comments below.)

Good luck, whatever you decide to read!

Jon F. Baxley (Author, Editor, Ghostwriter and Proofreader)

THE SCYTHIAN STONE (eBook only)
THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY (eBook and hard cover)
THE REGENTS OF RHUM (coming fall '07)

Major Media Reviews:

Publishers Weekly

STARRED Review. A fast pace, sly humor, amusing dialogue and a richly researched background lift Baxley's fantasy, the first of a new series set in medieval Britain. When Merlin's long-ago apprentice Kruzurk Makshare (aka the Boozer) receives a dreamlike visitation from the legendary mage, he learns he must destroy another former apprentice, the villainous Seed of Cerberus. To do so will require a visit to the demon-guarded Blackgloom Keep. Enter young Daynin McKinnon, who discovers a curious rune-covered headstone, which may be the fabled Blackgloom Bounty, and brings it to Kruz's attention. Kruz believes it will provide entry into the fortress, while Daynin hopes the sale of the stone will restore his family's fortunes. The colorful cast of good guys and ne'er-do-wells includes the Pictish ghost of Brude McAlpin liberated from his tomb, assorted pursuing Caledonians and a bemused Prior Bede, whose monastery serves as a hiding place for the Blackgloom Bounty. Suitable for fantasy enthusiasts of all ages.

Terry Pratchett is always a fun read, especially anything from his Discworld series. His books can be read on a couple of levels.

Also Piers Anthony with his Xanth series.
