First of all, dont ever ask your team to do something that you yourself have not done, or something that you wouldn't do right beside them. Be equal to everyone, don't pick favorites. Live by the philosphy 'work hard, play hard'. It sounds to me that just by asking this question, you would be great to work for. It seems you have compassion and want to make the work place better for everyone. I think you're probably doing just fine. If you're getting these feelings about your boss, why don't you arrange a meeting with them and ask them, or wait til your next evaluation. They will tell you what they expect from you and if you're working up to their standards.

If you have a staff of 25 and you get along great with everyone, then you don't really understand what it means to be an effective manager. It's your job to make your employees productive, not happy. Talk to your bosses and find out what would make them appreciate you more. Then do it -- and don't worry about getting along with the staff.

Study motivational theory. Not everyone is motivated by the same things. Some want money, some recognition, some flexibility, etc.

ASK THEM what you can do better. LISTEN to the answers.

Not every response will be do-able, but the process will give you some ideas and show that you value their opinions and ideas.

My friend says "People do not care how much you know, Until they know how much you care".
I add "Listen and listen again, then ask " if you fake it they will know it.
