you question is not very specific but i will try.cable to dtv box,box out to vcr,vcr to tv.you can only record what you are watching because your tv and vcr have to be on channel 3 to record dtv.

much better to hook up tivo with your directv. record onto tivo and then record it to your vcr. but now they're coming out with HDDVD recorders that do the same thing.

you need to make sure the cable channel is on the one you want to record. direct tv sux, i should know...i have it
