Most doctors now don't spank, they pinch the foot. Its just to get a reaction so the baby will take their first breath

There is no spanking going on usually the baby comes into the world just a blaring not liking being out of its warm and secure place I have 4 kids and never saw a spanking going on if they are not crying by the time the baby is cleaned up the baby is letting every one know the baby is here.

I don't know if the doctor spanks babies, but my boyfriend is a doctor and he spanks me from time to time. Only when I'm bad.

the newborn baby has to adjust itself to the atmosphere out of the mother's womb. so it starts gasping for breath (the lungs are expanding for the first time!). if it doesn't, the doc spanks it to make the lungs take the impulse and expand!

Its just a slap on the bottom to make the baby cry out so they know its lungs are working :-) and so it clears any mucus in the Lungs and throat. I don't think they do it anymore.
Take Care and God Bless !

I understood that it is a slap while the child is upside down to rid the throat of mucous. Is it still done? My newborn son's doctor used a suction tube in the mouth/throat.

i think it's to make babies cry the first time...it's a sign that the baby is breathing....

now that i've seen the post above, maybe it's not actually "spanking", but it is to help the baby breathe....

its done to clear any mucous from the lungs especially after birth since the fetus has been in a sterile environment for the last nine months

Most doctors do not do that anymore as they have found that babies instinctively cry once the umbilical cord has been cut. It is like they sense that they have been cut off from their mothers.
