The loss of it. Our own lives are all we have. So I guess that if we lose that we lose everything. We don't actually own anything here. The things that we have in our possession either belonged to someone or something else before us and will become someone or something else's possession after we die. That includes our own bodies. Our lives are the most valuable thing we have and all the good and bad things that happen along the way are the experiences that make up our lives. So you have to learn to appreciate the good and the bad experiences. Bad experiences give us a frame of reference to let us distinguish what good is. So from that perspective even bad things have their value. If something in life doesn't go exactly the way you planned it is unfortunate or even a great misfortune but as long as you are living the greatest misfortune hasn't occurred yet. That reminds me of a line from that movie "Roadhouse" with Patrick Swayze where the bar owner, at the end of the night, said "It was a good night... Nobody died."

Losing a child. And then, losing a parent, having a terminal disease, becoming physically and/or mentally disabled.

EDIT: You didn't mean my greatest misfortune, now did you? I think you meant the greatest misfortune for anyone...
