I don't think anyone has ever explained the mechanism of gravity.

F = -GMm/r**2 is a way of calculating it

exchange of virtual particles called gravitons is a way of talking about it.

warping of spacetime around masses is another way of predicting behavior of objects in gravitational fields.

But I have no clue why or how it happens.

Newton discovered the first theory of gravity. Einstein's general theory of relativity provided a more accurate picture of it. However, there isn't a "correct" theory of gravity yet because it cannot (so far) be made compatible with quantum mechanics. Never heard of anyone called Lesage.
