there r two cases
1). if u r not going to leave the city or town in which u are buying the PC for atleast one year then u can opt for an assembled one

2)if u are the one who frequently change the city or town u can opt for a company pc like HP.

because if u get any problem within your warranty period they will come to your home anywhere in the country irrespective of the place where u have buyed your PC and they will replace the damaged part with a new one. but in the case of assembled pc you should go to the dealer directly at the place where u have buyed ur PC. moreover there will be no coustomer support to answer ur questions. but,for a company pc you can troubleshoot by just calling a toll free number free of cost

i prefer u buy a company PC

(1) If you can afford a premium & want to learn nothing & NOT be in self-control(Life's Rule:Your PC should be in Your Control), then buy a branded PC (2) Assembled PC's are locked/sealed & you can not upgrade without their support, further they come with fixed configurations and U need to pay on a per call basis even for trivial problems (3) The parts Warranty duration are less that what you would get directly from OEM's if your assemble your
PC Urself(4)get a buddy who knows the Art oF Assembly & enjoy the thrill of choices & excercise of purchasing components & get to know the simple technik of assembling Ur PC -It's Ur Life!- if it's done this way along with your School going kids, they would Love It! You are not designing a PC/software -just Assembling >Disassembling > Reassembling ~ Good LucK.

get an assembled pc only if u trust the assembler to be pretty skilled and u he is ready to give a warranty as a whole,so that u dont have to run around to each service point for the different branded components!....

whereas a branded will save all those hassles n since the prices have come down u`l get a more reliable system if its branded n ofcourse there`re bundled softwares and free replacement warrantys to chose from....

acorrding to me you should buy an assembled one as each company has something good like intel has good cpu, iball has good keyboard, etc and if you buy a company one
then for eg. may be you buy of intel then in that keyboard is not nice
in assembled you have your own choice and you get what is good
i can tell this because i myself have an assembled one

get it custom made or do it yourself because:

you get what you want
better performance in each way
and you can learn to fix and upgrade yourself

assembled pcs are often cheaper and easier to get done but:

you usually miss out on performance in most aspects (audio, video or storage)
