Divide 32 by 8 = 4
Multiply 4 by 5 to get the number of girls in the class = 20
Therefore (and this is really easy) there must be 12 boys in the class because: 32 - 20 =12
alternatively 5/8 is a fraction Multiply that by 32 to get the no. of girls, then subtract. Even quicker take the remaining fraction 3/8 and multiply that by 32 = 12. On a calculator a fraction doesn't look like a fraction which can be confusing so the first method is the easiest to understand.

32students/eight parts = 4 students in each part. The number of girls make of 5 parts, so 4*5=20. 20 are girls. 32-20=12. Since one has to be either a girl or a boy to be a student (you can't have an iguana count as one of the students), you can conclude that the rest of the 12 students are boys.

32 students=8/8 of a class
32 students=8/8 of a class=5/8 of the class are girls+ x/8 of them are boys
number of boys=8/8-5/8 of the class
number of boys=3/8 of the class
3/8 of 32=x
32 divided by 8=4
4 times 3=12
12 boys are in the class

how much more than 1/8 would 5/8 of 32 be?
how much less than 1 is 5/8?
