The United States has no official language. Some of the US states do. There are very few parts of the US where you can't function in English by walking a few blocks. There are pockets in various cities where other languages are prevalent. New Orleans, for example still uses some French and Creol from its Acadian/Cajun residents.
Most western US cities have a "Chinatown" where Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese is quite common. The most widespread second language in the US is Spanish (which is also my second language - which I rank in order of my skill level). If you think about it, most of the US west of the Mississippi once belonged to Mexico, so I guess this is appropriate.
In Canada? French is the official language of Quebec. However - my French is horrible, and I find if I make an effort, I am soon rescued in English. There are also significant Chinese speaking populations in Toronto and Vancouver.
