If you are talking about a web server and you have XP Professional (not home) then you can install "Internet Information Server" or IIS which comes with the OS. I have included a link below that shows you how to get it up and running.

Another kind of web server you can get is "Apache" which is free and is simply a program that you can run and install. I have included a link to apache as well.

Both are nice services to use. If you are looking at using ASP pages or .NET for your website, you will want to go with IIS. If you are looking for PHP as your server language, I recommend Apache (even though you can use IIS for PHP as well).

To complete the answer, I have included a link to where you can get PHP and a tutorial on how to install it with Apache.

If you mean to make your computer just a normal file server, simply setup the computer on the network and have it share folders, files, and drives. You can do this all in XP pro as well.

Any other kind of server will require you to download some software. Just do a Google search for the type of server software you are interested in. Example "IRCD" for an IRC chat server.

Enjoy!

Buy a machine that has enough hardware capacity to function as a server. Install the server os and configure it to allow for other pcs to connect to as in a network.
