Neons tend to get eaten by just about any other larger fish. They are a very small schooling fish. This just screams "food" to other fish. Any of your fish wearing a sinister grin? Many people who keep neons keep a small school of them and replace some as necessary. They look cool when they swim around together in small schools.

Fish have been known to jump out of the tank. In the case of a missing Neon, I would strongly suspect foul play though.

I've had tetra's jump out of the aquarium---even tho the top appeared to be covered. But, i've also had tetra's gulped whole by tetra's the same size. I never would've believed it had I not witnessed it. Hopefully, your tetra is really, really good at hiding.

I had a neon die in my aqaurium while I was at work, and by the time I got home he was already so decomposed he was sucked up the filter tube. When I cleaned it out you couldn't even tell he was in there.

Check around the floor. I had a goldfish that "commit suicide" by leaping out of his tank. We looked for him and later found him dehydrated on the floor. :(

All fish will eat anything they can fit in their mouths. Even your sweet innocent pleco, or algae eater.
