One that has been well maintained. If you are using it for a daily driver, the most important thing will be its condition, not year or model.
If you plan to soup it up, be careful. Adding horsepower to a car that's in bad shape already can leave you with a grenade on wheels unless you fix the underlying problems. But some cars that have potential and tend to go for cheap include Fox-body Fords, Chrysler K-cars (either get a turbo one or swap in the turbo engine), and rear wheel drive Volvos (which can also be turbocharged). You may wish to look up some back issues of Grassroots Motorsports - they've had an annual challenge to build a performance car for a total dollar amount equal to the number of the year they held the Challenge.

At that price point you'll be spending most of your money just keeping it running, not adding on to it.
But hey, it beats walking and is a great way to learn about maintaining and repairing cars! I don't say that to be facetious either. I learned a LOT about mechanics from my first car and that lead to a successful career in aviation maintenance a few years later -- and saved me a TON of money doing most repairs myself!

they will all be prayers for that price. and the brand does not matter. if you go to any paint and body place or mecahnics shop on the bad side of town where the doverman pinchers are chained up. Just go see the mechanic or body specialist and ask if he has any for sale. They usually will have something decent for that price.
