Never tip the receptionist, they actually have no control in giving you a nicer room. They can get fired for doing that. Just mention its your first time in Las Vegas and your on your honeymoon. They might talk with their supervisor and upgrade your room. As fas as tipping, its always double the tax unless you were waited on hand and foot I would suggest a more generous tip. For example, I went to the rio buffet and I left the waitress or the person that brings your drinks $6.

2 things to do to upgrade to better rooms in vegas:
1. Mention when you check in that you are from the UK, and that it's your first time in Vegas and on your Honeymoon, and ask if it would be possible to be upgraded. (some places will let you upgrade for a small fee).
2. When you go to your room, have the bellhop assist with your bags. He will open your room, and move your bags into your room. When he is in your room, pull out a $20 and a $5 and hold them in your hands. Ask the valet if there is any way to get you a better room, as this seems unaceptable. Bellhops can call down and let them know that there is something wrong with the room, and suggest another (better) room and this is often done. If he can get you a better room, give him the $20, if not, give him the $5.
It also helps to become a member of the Casino's player's club. It's free, and you can do it online.
Keep in mind that if you are in Vegas during a big event, it will be more difficult to upgrade. Same for most weekends. Your best chances will be during the week. Also remember that when the big spenders are out, the tips increase exponentially.
Good luck and congratulations on your wedding.

In general, Vegas will charge you for any upgrades that are available. What I would suggest is that when you arrive at the hotel, lag behind the large group of people checking-in. When there are lots of people around, they want to work quickly, they don't want to take time with each person.
When there are less people around, both of you can stand up there and act very very happy. Very quietly mention that it is you honeymoon... and your first time to the states. you are surprised at how nice everyone has been, etc. etc.
Ask if it has been a long day, etc. etc.
When they are looking for your booking, ask if you booked a honeymoon appropriate room.
OR
When you first walk up, say "Hello, we're from the UK and we don't know if we are supposed to tip the bellman or you. Everyone is so nice and I just want to make sure I tip you appropriately." Ignorance can lead to special treatment.

I work at the front desk at a hotel, and the best way to get an upgrade is by treating me with respect. It sounds kinda silly, but compliments will go a long way (ie the service and hotel are great or we have nothing like this in the U.K. and were so excited to be here. If you want any luck though, make sure he or she is not busy or else you can just annoy them.
As far as tipping someone before they help you would seem a bit odd and it would be really obvious that you want an upgrade, and when its obvious that a person just wants an upgrade, they tend to get the room next to the service elevator.

No. Rooms are assigned by computer in advance to check in. If you can call the hotel directly, ask for the name of the front desk manager and that person's fax number. Send them a nice fax explaining it's your honeymoon (bonus points for first time to Vegas) and ask if there's anything they can do to make your stay more enjoyable. If they can upgrade you, they will, at the very least you'll get a fruit basket or a dinner or something. It's worth asking. But, do it in advance. Many hotels in Vegas sell out and there's often no place to upgrade at time of check in.
