I am a very visual learner and I really love guitar and I have such a passion for it. I love The Strokes and their guitarists Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr. inspire me.I am 13 years old in September and I really think if I start adding on another instrument (because I already play piano) I should do it right now. I am a visual learner. I learn by seeing things. So should I spend money on lessons or should I just go ahead and try to teach myself.

Many musicians are self-taught on guitar... Eric Clapton for one. I'm sure it's better to get lessons and learn to read music as well.

In actuality, all musicians teach themselves. Sometimes they have an instructor help them and give them tips, but every musician has to teach themself. A teacher cannot hold you hand and move your fingers to the correct strings and the correct position anymore then you can look at a picture in a book and move your own finger. Your best bet would be to get a book and start on your own. If you find that you need help, ask a friend who can play the guitar and then try to find someone professionally to instruct you on a certain fingering or whatever.

No, you can't learn by teaching yourself unless you are an extremely gifted virtuoso (in which case you wouldn't even need to ask this question). Those guys took lessons and because of it were able to grasp the basics quicker and develop their own unique styles sooner. If you want to spend a lot of time just learning the basics then don't take lessons. If you want to be a real guitar player sooner, get yourself to your tutor!!!

I taught myself years in the past, yet I already ought to study music in view that i began out out on the Keyboard. I did spend some money, early on, with a reliable instructor... and that's rather significant... you could %. up some undesirable behavior once you initiate out which would be hell to get rid of later on... I in simple terms flinch once I see what undesirable behavior some properly properly-known rock musicians have... and a few won't be able to hardly play a guitar in any respect.

Teach yourself. Search the net for lessons and exercises. Your library should have several books to get you thru the basics with ease along with more advanced stuff. Use guitar magazines and look up tablature online to learn some tunes and more exercises. Take what you know on piano and transcribe it to tabs and play it on guitar.
