In the short term, your college will have computer access but probably with restrictions.

Longer term, you could look on ebay, but it's a crap shoot! You buy sight unseen and hope for the best. Sellers can be in denial about what their old laptop is worth, and bargain-hunting buyers can bid prices up too high. Avoid buying something just because it's cheap. Ond favorite trick of sellers is to sell laptops with parts missing, assuring you the parts are available on ebay. They stripped out the parts and are selling them separately. Craigslist is a good source (at least in Northern California).

My best advice to you is to try to avoid buying a used laptop. You never know how they've been used. I've never bought a used laptop that was totally satisfactory without additional expenditure. Once you've bought a used laptop and additional parts, you'd have been well on your way to owning a new one, and you'd have had the full years of its useful life for your use. From my experience, I recommend Dell. Their units start at 600.

Until then, I'd use the college facilities, look around school to see if someone is selling a working laptop, or check out local computer repair shops where you might get some kind of warranty. Good luck. It's not entirely unclear to me that you aren't asking someone to give you a laptop. I'd just say that usually the stuff that's given away is trash in or near terminal condition.

"TheDude" is sorta right, but if i were you, i wouldnt go with bestbuy cause there expensivie. i would go with Dell.com or Gateway. dont get a HP! there crappy. Dells and Gateways are the cheapest and are really good. and you can make small $30-40 payments each month.

For what it's worth, desktops can be had cheaper than laptops, if you can stand not being able to carry it around.

There is really no easy way to get money, we all work for it.
