To put it bluntly -- my two adult children are now facing this problem -- go around to the used furniture stores -- just get something -- anything -- that is what having a 1st apartment is.
It is a 1st step in accepting all your adult responsibiities. Get posters, put up pictures you like from magazines in simple frames, buy some fabric you like and throw it over the couch and chairs you purchase (it will liven up the old stuff and won't cost a lot of money) -- then add cheap throw pillows. You know, even a cheap solid color flat sheet purchased from an outlet store will, when thrown over an old couch or sofa liven it up and be OK.
Been there, done that, just be creative. eventually you will have been on your job for long enough to be able to save the funds and find something you like that is new and replace the old stuff. But that is for later. Just right now -- get creative with a little fabric, some pix from magazines, a couple of posters stuck to the wall, and have fun. EVERYONE has a 1st apartment or home, so we all know what it means to be short of cash and looking for ideas.

Depends on the quality and how long you want the furniture. If you are looking for cheap, try a furniture warehouse that may sell factory closeouts or slightly dented/scratched stuff really reasonable. If you want high quaility, check out American or something like that. Finding a place that delivers is always a plus!
As far as decorating...Target has some pretty domestic items....throw pillows, wall art, vases, lamps, things like that. i know it's tempting to go all out, but don't overspend and not be able to pay your rent and utilities. Just spend a little at a time and look for sales! Good Luck!

Go with the style for your table, and chairs. In your living room, and public areas.
Do whatever you want in your bedroom. But I advice against bold colors. My room is Tiffany blue , and brown.
If its dark wood, by furniture that complements. This helps create a flow.
As for colors I would look at your wardrobe for color ideas.
When I decorated my apartment I made sure I spent very little money. I shopped at Ikea, Walmart, Dollar General, and discount furniture stores. There is a section in most IKEA's where they sell old floor models for very cheap. And the plus is that there already assembled.

The best advice someone gave me was to keep walls neutral and add colour with accessories!
Pick a light coloured sofa and add bright cushions or a throw to bring in a little warmth and colour.
Fresh flowers on a table is all the decor it needs. Keep them simple yet elegant in a tall vase and replace frequently.
For the evening look, have coloured bulbs in your sockets. They can create many moods and also add colour to a room.
When it comes to personalising a room, again keep it simple. Too much is just that.......... too much. Decide what really brings out your personality and go with that. If you like horses for example have simple horse brasses on the walls or a couple of models on a shelf. That is all it really needs!
When filling a shelf, items should be displayed in odd numbers like 3 or 5. Any more and the shelf looks cluttered.
For the bedroom stick to warm bed covers in deep reds for example. Lots of cushions on the bed in complimenting colours really give it a regal look.
Keep all clutter off the floor and work tops, so no matter what, your house will always be welcoming and inviting.

Here's something I learned from some decorating show... and it really works. Find something you really love and decorate around it... like in my kitchen I have a red tea pot that I love so my kitchen is red and black with black and white pictures... my husband loved these green couches we found at a store so our living room is green and I made a dark wood cabinet with my dad years ago so our tables are dark wood to match. If you decorate around favorite pieces then you'll end up loving the look. And I use a lot of black and white pictures to decorate, I love them and they go with anything unless you have a print theme. And you can buy a really nice poster of some photo or art work and put it in a nice frame and hang it on a wall untill you can afford something nicer, and it usually looks just as nice.

your apartment should reflect your personality. so, what do you like???
i would put in paintings! i am a painter so this is cheap and inexpensive for me, but i am sure you can find something good for not too much money. in your bedroom put up a big buletin board and pictures of your favorite stars.
right by the enterance door get a dry erase board for those reminders or leaving notes to your visitor if u have guests.
Couches... i would go off white. chairs can be any color. get comfortable chairs, like a bean bag chair. use bright colors add to the room

Look on web pages like DIYnet.com or HGTV.com for color ideas. Also, I personally love Elle Decor (the magazine) for their ideas. Find a look that suits you, set up a budget and go looking for furniture and accessories at second hand stores and garage sales (I decorated my whole apartment this way and it looks fantastic). Then you can get a few great items and places like Pier One to tie everything together. Colors that are really hot right now are greens, browns and pinks, but use colors that make you feel good. Good luck :)

Hi. You've got a nice question but it is lacking in details. Just remember that you have to consider the color motiff of your entire house. I suggest that the color of the couch and the chairs should contrast or complement the dominant color of your house or that part of the house. Its all about color blending. : )
And... Try watching "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy". The show gives good advices.

check out the colours of the walls, throw in warm colours, match ur decor well with ur persona, while keeping the flat uncluttered.try not overdoing the bric-bracs:eg-a bright picture of a fruit on a contrasting coloured wall can jazz up ur room.Try a cabinet lined along the wall to store ur books.a nice fluffy rug can add a dash of warmth to ur room.check out nifty old seconds shops for being spoilt for choices, and getting good bargains as well..U cud try making a collage of ur family photographs and displaying it on the wall.
Good luck with ur new apartment!1
