In the movie V for Vendetta, V activates the fire alarm and as a result the elevators are put out of order.

However, what should the software (that controls the elevators) do with the carriages that already have people in them? Opening the doors on any floor might expose the passenger to the fire. Bringing them to the first floor might do that and/or it may plunge the carriage into the fire, if the carriage originally was near the top floor.

Anyone any ideas for a sound solution?

Many elevators are set to return to the main level (lobby, first floor, etc.) Other elevators may stop where they are so firefighters can controll the fire and then rescue the people inside.

A better system would be for the building to have heat sensors, and this information is transmitted to the elevator, and the car is sent to the closest floor to the main exit which is not on fire, or the floor farthest away from the fire.

At least in Australia he lift doesn't have sprinkles.
You can't use the lift during the fire.
Thre's wto types of lifts, depending o the duilding hight.
With he first typw the lift will go down then stop here until the fire alarm stops.
For the smaler buildgs the lift with the people will stop at the next level down were the fire alarm is not activated yet. You supose to use stairs from there to get outside.

The elevator should have fire extinguishers installed everywhere, and if it senses heat(to the heat of fire) then the FIre extinguishers are activated, and will help them get to the first floor. The ceilings should have those sprinkler things, so that shouldn't be a problem.
