The national Libertarian Party has existed since 1971 and has nominated presidential candidates since 1976. It is the third largest political party (larger than all other third parties combined) with State Parties in all 50 States and each of the Territories and with more elected officials than all other third parties combined.

Its Internet home site can be found at:
http://www.lp.org/issues/platform_all.shtml

He (among other things) you will find its Constitution with the following preamble:

“As Libertarians, we seek a world of liberty; a world in which all individuals are sovereign over their own lives and no one is forced to sacrifice his or her values for the benefit of others.

We believe that respect for individual rights is the essential precondition for a free and prosperous world, that force and fraud must be banished from human relationships, and that only through freedom can peace and prosperity be realized.

Consequently, we defend each person's right to engage in any activity that is peaceful and honest, and welcome the diversity that freedom brings. The world we seek to build is one where individuals are free to follow their own dreams in their own ways, without interference from government or any authoritarian power.

In the following pages we have set forth our basic principles and enumerated various policy stands derived from those principles.

These specific policies are not our goal, however. Our goal is nothing more nor less than a world set free in our lifetime, and it is to this end that we take these stands.”
Libertarian philosophy is much older than the party which can be considered as rooted deep in the Founding of the United States. In this context it is quite focused on the Constitution of the United States applied as True Intent. There are many, many, writers of libertarian thought and it is usually closely associated with Austrian Economics.

In the context of today's political organizations it is likely the closest to the thoughts and intent of the Founders.

A great deal of reading about it is available at:
Laissez Faire Books:

and, the CATO Institute:

The only connection that libertarianism has to either of the two older political parties is that there is a Libertarian Caucus in both of them.

The Libertarian party has nothing to do with either the main stream Republican or Democratic Parties. If you visited the Advocates site you mention on your 360 page, the test clearly shows the Libertarian party is neither Republican nor Democrat. It is neither "liberal" or "conservative" (in today's defintions) in my opinion.

I would like to believe it is an alternative to the idiots in both of those parties. Something to give me Hope not the dispair & hate you spew.

Appeasing liberals?! Republicans? hahaha

The government that governs least, governs best. What does that have to do with appeasement?

Do you believe it is a requirement to be filled with hateful vitriol is a requirement to be a Libertarian?
Far as I know Bill O'Reilly is not a Libertarian.... or any of those other nut jobs.

Work to bring America together not apart. Then the outside enemy has won.

I was under the impression that Libertarianism is a political philosophy advocating that individuals should be free to do whatever they wish with their person or property, as long as they do not infringe on the same liberty of others. Could you explain how this applies to the Republican Party? If this were true why does the United States act the way that it does? Most importantly, why is there a War On Drugs?!

I have not got any concept what you're conversing concerning to the Whigs have been an American political party in early 1800s. Is that what you recommend? They have been in contrast to libertarians in any respect. Whigs needed larger government and economic stimulus from the government.

Libertarians believe the role of government is to protect the citizens from uninitiated force and fraud. That statement might seem a little abstract. Take ten minutes to check out the Philosophy of Liberty by Lux Lucre as the isil.org site. It will explain the philosophy in very clear terms.

The Libertarian Party is a political party that believes in limiting the federal government to those issues outlined in the constitution. They also believe in strong individual rights and responsibilities.

In this modern era of mega-government controlling every aspect of life, including tracking phone calls, internet usage, diets, sexual preferences, etc., such a throwback to freedom and liberty seems a little antiquated. Personally I find Libertarianism very appealing, but the majority of people in this country prefer government handouts so they can continue their lives of overconsumption without thinking, i.e. obese and in front of the TV. Fat, drunk and stupid is a comforting lifestyle.

People who believe that the private sector, by the driving force of greed, will take care of all of society's needs. It's kind of a pipe dream, if you asked me.
