Well if you dont have a great voice to start off with dont waste your time. Your best bet is to go to a singing coach to get lessons. They will teach you how to properly use your voice and to make the most of what you already have. You also need to be confident because singing puts you up on stage in front of many people so if you cant handle pressure then dont bother.

Most singers start out small and work their way up. You could start by singing in a church choir, going to small clubs and auditioning, or maybe a county fair or something. If you're comfortable singing on stage, maybe you could try out for American Idol.

If you want to know a very good vocal coach try to visit https://tr.im/OFUUc an online vocal coaching tutorial. Everything, ranging from breathing fundamentals, vocalizing exercises, techniques on singing high and low notes, how to not go off-key/out of tune/off-sync, musicianship and music theory, proper diction and articulation, and a lot more are covered, all in our native language. It can be quite technical in nature, but it really helps since it covers the musical aspect of singing deeply and not just concentrates on how to impress people with your vocal range, riffs and runs and other cliches that do not necessarily make one a complete vocalist.

At my school, which was Catholic, we were singing hymns most days. The choir was almost obligatory. I sang a solo part in Westminster Cathedral, when our schools patron had his 200th anniversary. I now sing in bars, and play guitar, ballads and rock, blues. The main thing is confidence. Can you believe in your voice? Don't strain, stay in the range you have.
Go see a voice coach, they will stop your bad habits, and give you lessons on the important details you would never pick up on your own.
