It is very difficult to conventionalize (but that's not news when physics is discussed) but the general thinking is that space cannot exist without matter. Space is nothing but the distance between objects - and as the objects in our universe expand outward, they are creating space.

It may seem strange but the big bang created the most important "substance" in our universe, a condition for the establishment of every thing else, namely SPACE itself!!
