Try a power edger. It's like a weed eater but with a different head. With one you will be finished and drinking beer in no time.

First it depends on where you live, thus what kind of grass. I've lived in IL, Chicago suburbs, (Kentucky bluegrass) to Dallas, TX area. (St Augustine.) I have found for the best and easiest way to edge Kentucky blue is with a powered edger on a wheel(s) Kentucky blue grass and the ryes that go with it develop a deep thick root system. That's why they can go dormat in summer droughts. The grass down south tend to spred horizontally. So, a weed whip will suffice (electric the best) Black and Decker "Grass Hog" would be my pick for weed whips, for the grasses of the South (which, by the way can be used on Kentucky blue also, its just more work and doesn't leave as nice an edge on that tough grass......... But for the easiest to use and the one that does the best job of edging get a powered lawn edger. Craftsman have always been plenty good. The 12amp Landscape Edger is a good one for about $89.99. I'm sure you can find a cordless model but they cost too much more than they are worth.......for the easier grasses like St Augustine, a grass Hog by Back an Decker is a good choice. It's a 14 inch corded model for $69.99, they also make a cordless model which makes more sense with the string whips for 89.97.

If I lived in the north in a typical subdivision, with sidewalks I'd go with the electric lawn edger (of the many brands I would still buy Craftsman).

For the easier to trim grasses of the South, I would go with the Grass hog either corded or cordless(but corded don't start losing their charged operating time).

If you live in the north and have a fenced in back yard or need to trim a lot of irregular shapes, I personally would get an edger for the sidewalks and driveways and a cheap string trimmer for the back yard etc. .....But I will never own another gas powered model. Too load ,stinky and heavy. H ope this helps...Benj

Yes I have used the same type of tool to edge, usually justto put a new edge on a place that has never had one or been over grown. I think a blade edger works the best. You can get a push manual edger that has a wheel, but that takes a lot of work to use effectively. Or you can use a gasoline edger with four wheels or one wheel on a poll. Or you can use a string edger, gas or electic. Any electric edger is quieter and has less mechanical problems but you have to have a long extension cord which can be inconvenient. There is also a straight flat shovel tool similar to the half moon that works as well.

you can use a weed eater held on edge and this works but be careful. they make numerous power edgers . electric ones are only about $75. gas ones go up from there.

hey, we used to use a pearing knife to do that job.
edging means just that....put your knife into the dirt and slide your knife along the cement (or along the line you've chosen) and press hard then lift the grass with roots that you've cut off.

If the grass part is still in good shape you can put it elsewhere where you have bald parts in your grass...lighten the soil where the bald part is, put the plug of grass, step on it with your foot and water it.

Borrow a weed eater and hold it sideways down drive and sidewalk and it looks great.

they sell electric edgers which are the easiest to operate or they rent them too.

this is a faster way, though your chosen way works too.
