i don't recall, but my most fun moment was falling from FL350 (nominally, 35,000 ft), sideways in a C-141B at (or slightly over) Vdne to an 1100-ft MSL recovery (which was about 250 ft AGL) in just over 1 minute. I was part of the team repairing the plane while we were falling.
Our average speed for the *descent* (not forward speed) was 335 mph! The flight engineer was stuck to the starboard inner wall of the cargo area; his feet were about 1 foot off the floor. I don't recall how many "g" we pulled on recovery (I couldn't lift my head, and it was hard to breathe), but WOW it was a total rush!
The copilot lost it completely during the fall, but the pilot had ice water in his veins. The FE was talking so fast it sounded like gibberish. I was embarassed for the frozen copilot; had it not been for the pilot's steel nerves, we would have punched a serious hole in the earth.
I wish there was a way to do stuff like that on a regular basis, but if you know you're gonna be okay, it kinda takes all the thrill out of it: it's only fun as long as (a) there's reason to doubt the outcome, and (b) your actions and/or inactions directly influence the outcome.
Hurricane Andrew had me airborne in my car (which obviously wasn't designed to fly), and that was a little scary.
OMG -- I just remembered my scariest moment: I was a teen snorkeling off the coast of Florida and observing a blue shark swimming in and out of my range of vision, getting a little closer to me each time. Several other sharks appeared, then quickly disappeared -- but as they left, they seemed to be fighting amongst themselves (I never determined why).
I was with a pal and we were swimming out to an island about 5-6 miles offshore; we had made about half the distance and we lost sight of land. Neither of us had navaids, but my pal was an experienced diver familiar with the area. Unfortunately, we got separated, and I couldn't find him.
Meanwhile, the largest of the sharks I'd seen (about 3 times as long as I am tall) kept appearing and disappearing as it swam under me, each time getting a little closer to me. At that point, I'm just trying to keep my cool and think my way out of the situation.
The shark had just swum by about 10 feet below me, and was out of my visual range when my pal found me and elected to get my attention by poking his finger in the middle of my back. I came unglued! For a split second, I was sure I was being eaten!
And I nearly drowned (which really sucked) before I got my wits back. We decided to return to the mainland, as the remaining daylight wouldn't have afforded us the opportunity to complete the round trip before nightfall.
