Because they are Americans, and that means they are stupid and don't know how to listen, use complete words or pronounce foreign proper names.

I used to live in New Mexico and I had a lot of fun with the more ignorant americans who, as typical americans, didn't know geography and they would ask about visiting New Mexico... I would tell them they needed a Visa and a passport and they were so stupid they believed it. I also would tell them how they needed to prove the ability to speak Spanish or they would be turned away at the border.

Remember the Movie "Blazing Saddles" when the Black Sheriff did the funny bit about holding himself at gun point?... his remark when he got into the Sheriff's office was "BOY... ARE THE REALLY STUPID"... So it's hardly surprising that the typical semi-literate and geographically challenged American would not know that New Mexico is a part of the U.S.

Sometimes they don't know. But new Mexico is not a country, it is a state of the USA, Mexico on the other hand, is a country.

I don't know. Probably the same reason why people think that Rhode Island is in New York (like Long Island). People don't take the time to learn.
