I mean, we don't all die at 40 nowadays. And all that fumbly, jumbly stuff has gone. Maturity, experience, patience and understanding being the added ingredients!

What a brilliant question - and I'm obviously not the only one who thinks so, as you've got so many answers.

When people talk about "sexual peak" I think they mean the physical capacity. And by the way, this is 17 for a man and early forties for a woman!

But sex is about so much more than this.

I think it's great when people question stereotypes. I am also keen to know about sex for the older person, after all, it is a given that we all get older. I'm happy to read all the positive replies.

Just one thing - what is this myth about the older woman going off sex? Some might, but then, some men might too. There is no biological reason, if the woman is healthy and has an interesting and interested partner. I'm a therapist and work with women in their sixties who talk about their good sexual relationship.

And if the older man finds it less easy to get instant erections, well, there is more to sex than that. And perhaps sex for the more mature person is an experience on all levels, not just instant physical gratification, but emotional and spiritual as well.

I guess sex won't be the same for the older person, but it sounds as if it can be better!

47 and going strong, it gets better for women!! you reach a level of confidence and can surpass men with lust..ha ha...men get better too as they slow down a bit and older people understand the importance of touch and foreplay is a big part of it all.
It is not only the body stuff but the mind as well, talking, understanding gives a richness to the act and, well I enjoy sex more now than at 20, and I hope to keep going with my fella untl we are unable to, it might be sex, but sometimes it is a spiritual meeting of the two of you and that is something that can not be matched by youth.....keep practicing....

Well, if you mean sex with the same partner, then it can be both ways (better or worse) unless you really know to keep it exciting and fresh. Since, you both know each other and are aware of each other's likes and dislikes, triggers etc. it actually gets better. Also you are not in a hurry to finish it off, so it is more sensuous and satisfying in the end.

Women, I am told, reach their peak in their early thirties whilst men peak in their twenties.

However, I think it all depends on compatibility under the sheets and in the hearts and minds (and wherever else you choose to play). Nobody can paint a beautiful picture, even with the biggest canvas and refined brushes, without knowing about colour, composition etc. If the inspiration is lacking, it will only ever be 'painting by numbers'...

I'm only 22 so I can't really say a whole lot except that I expect it starts to go down hill around 32-34. After 45 I don't want to be having sex, because I'd be old and gross.

Everyone is saying yes but I had a lot more sex when I was younger. Can't really say it's better as you get older...maybe if you stay with the same person for a long time it gets better though.

It get's better with experience, but unfortunately when you reach a certain age the ability to perform dwindles. Then, thank God, you eventually lose interest as well, and finally you can't even remember what it was like, and you die serene and happy.

No, not really. You might have more experience, and the motion of the ocean might pitch a boat or two over, but like huffing petrol, you never can quite get back the thrill of that first rush

Absolutely! That may be because I have been with the same person for nearly 26 years, 22 of those married, so we have learned so much together.

That is a big myth, you are at your sexual peak at 27 don't let anyone tell you different.

But LOVE gets better as you get older. It just gets better and better. And if you love the person you're having sex with it is WONDERFUL as you get older.
