The Goths (and Visigoths) were a race of peoples who became prominent during Roman times, and were some of the more successful "barbarians" in terms of creating new cities and causing trouble for the Roman Empire.

Gothic became used as a descriptive word some time in the middle ages to describe new forms of avant-garde architecture that were considered vulgar an tasteless due to the excessive ornateness and complexity, being referential to the barbarians of old.

This further has led through the ages to the gothic style of clothes and make-up that became popular in the early 1980s, as the style was over the top, over-elaborate and very showy, just as those buildings were hundreds of years early, and in the intervening decades, the goth scene has expanded from New Romantic into a sub-metal genre and thence on into darkwave (basically techno with dark vocals and heavy basslines).

Some elements of the goth look again came into vogue in recent years, mainly worn by emo-kids, and this is why members of this sub-genre are being called goths by the mass media, simply because of a wrong assumption that black clothes and eye make-up mean that they must be goth, when the real goths are rather different indeed, and don't hang about on street corners!

The goth subculture is a contemporary subculture prevalent in many countries. It began in the United Kingdom during the late 1970s to early 1980s in the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre. The goth subculture has survived much longer than others of the same era. Its imagery and cultural proclivities indicate influences from nineteenth century Gothic literature, mainly through horror movies.

The term "Goth" refers to literature in the 19th century that prided itself around dark, horrific, and sometimes grotesque tones. In today's society, when we deem someone as "Gothic", we are basically referring to their dark clothes/make-up, and their dark perception of themselves and life.
