ok..so your just starting ballet. So don't put pressure on yourself. You will learn everything in class. But there are a few hints i can give you. I would start streching EVerY single day intill practice even then. OmG it helps so much when you are flexible. Strech for about 10 min. Also do plea's every day. Basically pushing up on your tippy toes and down. it will make your cabs stronger. oh practices your five positions. you should be fine. And if you like work on single turns that will help and you will be advanced. Check out this website for info on Ballet girlfriend, and you will be a great Ballerina! Have fun in your dance class

Ballet is all about control of movement. That means- and what most people don't recognize about dancers- is that they have amazing muscle memory and strength. There are two essential areas that you might want to start building up so that when the time comes to train, you can really be your best. #1: Your core (which is your upper, lower abs and obliques)- When those are strong, you keep balance better, which enables you to turn better, stand better, kick better- lots of things. Secondly, work on your upper legs. Quads, hamstrings, and on your lower legs- calves. Having strong quads helps you hold positions longer (your endurance) and it takes strain away from your knees, so you'll be less likely to injure yourself. As for technique, my advice to you would be to hold off until you start class. If you don't know it yet, it's a bad idea to try and teach yourself steps w/o an instructor or choreographer nearby. If you learn it wrong, it will be a really hard habit to break when class starts. Have fun! Ballet rocks. :)

Ballet is based on french words, so all of the moves are in french...i will try to explain them the best way i can.
Ok, find a something to hold onto, as your ballet bar...it should be a bit higher than your waist.
Plie(slightly bend knees) and up(repeat 2 times), grand plie(squat all the way down): repeat all of this, in first, second and third position.
Ok, now face the bar, and lift your right leg onto the bar. Twist yourself so you are facing your right foot. Lean forward, and try to touch your toes(hold for about 5 seconds) Then lean backwards(with your arm still extended, in the air): repeat 2 times, on each side.
The most important thing in ballet is pointing your toes, so while doing any exercise remember to point your toes.
You can do any other exercises that with work on your flexibility, becuase that also is a very important part in ballet.
Good luck with your ballet class, and I hope you have fun!

I don't know about the exercises or many of the actual movements (I did a little disco dancing in my youth but that's about it), but I know about some of the music. Maybe start listening to some of the classics, like "Swan Lake", "The Nutcracker", "A Midsummer Night's Dream", etc. Also, many of these ballets are on video, and I see you can order them through Amazon. I also see some videos by the master, George Balanchine. Best of luck to you and your studies!

Stretch twice a day every day. Go to www.youtube.com and look up ballet, ballet exercises, etc.
This will help. But if your a beginner i would start by just stercthing. I you dont know what your doing and just do something someone recomends then you can hurt yourself.
