HP is a great brand.. And if you are staying in the US, you could customize your laptop the way you want it.. It shows which ones are Vista compatible.. I woulld suggest you to wait for the new Intel chips coming out soon.. (the Intel Cored Duo 2). Even the AMD chips are good !! Gamers and multimedia users use these chips a lot.. And they are cheaper too..
Recommended Config:
AMD Tuiron/ Intel Centrino Duo atleast the 1.7 GHz and above
1 GB RAM minimum
80 GIG HD Min..
And make sure you have any other graphics card other than the INtel based once.. (the 950 GM) an ATI or Nvidia would help a lot!!
The rest is all fine.. Oh ya u wold want a DVD+- RW

The minimum memory required just to run Windows Vista is 512 Mb so another 512Mb to that for programs.
If you plan to run games or heavy video applications....you never can have to much memory.
HP's are good but I like IBM for durability.
It's best to research business computers...the retail versions of manufactures equipment is basically tested less at the time of manufacture, engineered for obsolescence and basically a hustle.

Buy Toshiba. I don't think you can store many pics and movies. You should have other storage devices like external HDD. Don't wait for vista. If you can afford buy now. No one can say when Vista will be on market.

Look for 1-2MB of RAM and > 80GB of hard disk space.

Don't wait until vista comes out. You buy a computer for the applications, not the operating system.

http://www.hp.com is a decent brand, also http://www.dell.com is good. Check out http://www.costco.com for a great price and generous return policy.
