KB, the asker said it was steel, can't you read?

Hey Halo, in what universe does steel not rust?

Teetyme, he said the tub was steel where did he say a clawfoot cast iron tub?

The right thing to do in the long run, since it's only a steel tub, is to pull it out and replace it with another steel tub. They are lightweight and will last for years, and you can buy a new one for about $100 or so. The bottom two rows of tile will need to be replaced.

I feel your pain. I also have a iron tub that needs refinishing. But we can't get it out of the house without having somebody come cut it in half! They can be sand blasted and repainted. If you can get it out of your house make sure you have plenty of people to carry it! They are heavy! I don't know the type of paint used but a hardware store or professional would. My cousin redid the cast iron claw footed tub that was a grandparents but he does automotive refinishes on classic cars so he already had the tools to do it.

Until then......cleaning is a pain. Try the cleaner CLR. Soak rags with it and lay it on the tub for a little while. It's the only way I can get mine clean. Normal tub cleaners and bleach cleaners make the look even worse. Lime Away might help but it is not nearly as good of a product as CLR and the CLR only works if I soak it.

Since removing it and the sand blasting (sanding) and refinishing might get really expensive your best bet might to be replace it. If it is a clawfoot, I'd pay the money to keep it.

depending on how bad the rust is I suggest using Naval Jelly. it desolves rust and allows you to sand the raw metal and re finish it with primer and paint.... How ever if you have to re enamal you may be better off replacing the tub as some refininshing companies will charge as much as a new tub would be worth...

You really have to weigh the age of the original tub and decide if it will be worth your efforts.

Good luck

Depends on what you mean by rusted. All the way thru? Trash it! If its simply surface rust....take it to someone who can "pickle" it or sandblast it! It will then need a protective coating of some sort.
Halo, steel does rust! High grade stainless steel doesnt! Stick to fixin sandwiches!

It's probably cast iron, but regardless, look in your local yellow pages for someone who reglazes bathtubs. They can put a professional ceramic finish back on your tub.

Try sanding and then painting with an enamel epoxy made for reglazing tubs. It's kind of a messy DIY job, but it can be done.

cast iron tubs are nice, and if it has claw feet it is worth som $'s. Have it re-glazed by a professional, not something to do on your own.

Steel does not rust. It might be made of iron, in which case you can get it galvanized.
