Look at :

autotrader.co.uk
desperateseller.co.uk
exchangandmart.co.uk

At this price, overall condition rather than age / miles is key.

A car with an organised folder of service history, receipts and paperwork is a good sign.

Don't settle for MOT failures, - there are other cars out there for around £250 with some tax and test.

Start with Ford and Vauxhall for cheaper insurance and parts.

Reliability surveys suggest you should also consider :
Honda
Hyundai
Kia
Mazda
Mitsubishi
Nissan
Proton
Toyota

Avoid ex taxis.

Good luck in your search.

At that price i would suggest you dont buy a Ford..old Fords cost more in repairs than old Vauxhalls or old Peugeots. Peugeots have good long lasting engines..even with very high mileages they seldom give trouble.
The guy who suggested Lada Riva..(not sure if he was joking) is a very good suggestion..very cheap & very reliable but are now quite difficult to find as people made a business out of selling them back to the Russians, so they are becoming a rare sight on our roads...dont buy a Lada without an MOT though.

I paid £200 for a 1992 Nissan Micra which has done 3000 trouble free miles since then. I had a Toyota Corolla and that was the same, so my advice is, buy japanese.

Vauxhall Corsa Robust????? I havent heard a joke like that in a long time, your best bet is something like an early pug 106 or Renault Clio, a late vauxhall Nova or Mk2 Astra, nothing with an engine bigger that 1.4

Get an old Vauxhall Corsa. They're robust, cheap to buy spares and tyres for and in ready supply.

You'll probably get a really old one. But I suggest a fiesta or golf.
