It comes from the Latin "Terra Australis" meaning southern land

It means Land of the South or South Land, probably having a reference to being south of the Equator, as Australia was the largest territory area for England south of the Equator.

It is what the queen screamed during a night f passion the night before she sent all of my convict descendants over here. Seriously though it has no true meaning, I live here and can't find the answer - people talk of links to australis etc, It is just the name cook had for it when he arrived. Did anyone name the moon the moon etc with astrology for a reason. NO It was just a thing of choice.
