During the first month and a half of my pregnancy, I got drunk several times and used cocain 3 times for the first time in my life. I'm not the partier, but I was hanging out with a different group of people at the time. Since then, I've gotten engaged and settled back down and been totally healthy, eating right and taking a prenatal vitamin daily. I've heard horror stories about what the use of alcohol and cocain in early pregnancy can cause to the baby (birth defects, mental retardation, i.e.) but I've also been told not to worry about it because I've been so healthy since then and the baby was too young for it to matter. I'm too scared to ask my doctor because I'm not known as a partier because I never have been, and I dont want anyone I know making false judgements about me. What's your honest opinion about the health of my baby?

You stopped and your concern for your baby is most important now and that is a good thing.

Be honest with your doctor. It is likely he has heard this before and probably worse. Tests will show how your baby is doing. You might want to ask about an amnio test to put your mind at ease.

I honestly think your baby will be fine. The placenta isn't fully functioning until the end of month 3. We find out so much earlier that we are pregnant than we did 20 years ago. With my first pregnancy, I had to miss 2 periods (so be at least 6-8 weeks pregnant) before the doctor would even test you for pregnancy. You could still talk with your doctor a little to get the reassurances you need. If you don't feel comfortable doing that with your OB doctor, go to planned parenthood and speak to a nurse or doctor there. I know they will reassure you that all is well. Enjoy this time in your life and don't beat yourself up over the past - it truly is a waste of your time and emotional energy.

Hi Brooke,
I really don't think that you have much to worry about. You have stopped and settled down your life, and you are doing all the right things now.
To put your mind at rest, you should speak to your doctor, but I do think that things will be okay.
Those horror stories are much more publicised than when mothers-to-be have done similar things to you and things have been alright, so remember that you have only heard the bad side of things, not the successes.
Your scans may be the ideal opportunity to see if there has been any damage done. Talk to your doctor, you'll not be only person ever to have had these concerns.
I wish all the best for the future and I hope that you are both healthy. Congratulations on your pregnancy and on your engagement.
From Pam.

Take it easy now, and forgive yourself.
It is true that during the initial month of pregnancy all main systems of the baby are set: this mean that anything going wrong then turns into a miscarriage. It did not happen, right?

You are now taking care of yourself, resting, and staying healthy. There are all chances that your baby is perfectly fine - and thanking you for your care.

Remember that until a generation ago, it was normal to keep drinking and smoking during pregnancy. While now we know better, that still did not result in difformed children!!! look at your own parents, look around - all were born to a mom who drank - moderately!!! - and often smoked.

DOn't listen to alarm. Talk to your doctor, and he may help you in understanding how to stay healthy now - and even by doing an amniocentesis if you are really still worried.

Best of luck.

Relax. Take a deep breath. Many mothers have done silly and potentially dangerous things early in pregnancy and the baby's been okay. The important thing is that you're taking care of you two NOW. Don't be afraid to bring these concerns up with your Doctor. They may have the guidence you need, and should be informed of those past events just in case something does come up. Stuff happens hon, a period of bad choices doesn't make you a bad person, and righting the wrongs and taking care of yourself are good things. Just talk to your Dr and relax. Have a healthy and wonderful pregnancy! Best of luck!!

during the first two months ALL of the major develpements happen. EVERYTHING, nervous system, circulatory system, heart (and it starts beating 22 days after ovulation) the brain is open/ exposed for a while and starts to fuse shut before the end of the second month. the face developes, the arm buds become arms, finger buds are still being formed. the eyes are open and exposed as the baby doesn't have eye lids this early.

if i were you i would be scared to death! if you knew ahead of time how delicate the entire process of conception and early pregnancy was... your baby could have some serious problems. a VERY common problem is learning disabilities. but, you'll be lucky if that is all you have to deal with! physical deformaties to the face and limbs can occur also.

i suggest that you be honest with your doctor and ask him/her more questions. be honest about the drug use, you WON'T get into trouble about disclosing the truth to your doctor!

best of luck to your innocent baby

Yes, you should be more concerned than worried. Make sure you have pre natal care through out your pregnancy. And tell your doctor EVERYTHING about your lifestyle and what you did. The doctor can't administer proper care if you don't tell them the truth about your behavior. if you are that uncomfortable find another doctor. The important thing is to make sure your baby is growing properly. They are not there to make judgement on your character only on the health of you and that baby. This is the oath they took in school. Doctors are human and understand everybody gets crazy once in a while. Your situation happens more often than you think....Take care of your self and your beautiful baby....

No one will know for sure until this baby is born. You should really tell your doctor, because if there are any complications during your pregnancy or even delivery he would be better prepared to handle them.
People make mistakes, my dear. Your Doctor shouldn't be judging you. If you were a bad person, you wouldn't be so concerned now. You have taken all of the correct steps now for the baby. It would be better for your baby if you did tell him. All so when you have your ultra-sounds, he would be looking closer to see if there where any problems.

Please don't keep worrying because the baby can feel all of that tension. Relax, and go to the Doctor.
Good Luck and God Bless

Well, if its worrying you so much, mention it when you go to the doctors the next time. You know that what you say to them is confidential and I'm sure that as you have now turned over a new leaf so to speak it will be ok. It's much better to put your mind at rest so that you can carry on with your pregnancy worry free and end up having a content baby. Best of luck.

The baby should be fine. The effects of alcohol can cause more problems later in pregnancy. Long as you have quit the drug use and continue to be healthy the rest of the pregnancy the baby should be fine. Talk to your doctor...trust me your not the first woman to do such things when you didn't know you were pregnant.
