I'm living in a Muslim country but I'm an atheist. Qur'an has very strict and weird rules and it totally demeans women, like I cannot even start to express how awful it is. BUT the majority of Muslims didn't read the book or even when they do, they don't apply those rules. So there are Muslims who live like they have no religion and this is the majority.
But when I see people talking about Muslims being bad people, I hate this generalization.
There are terrorists with many aims and one of the worst is the Radical Islamic Terrorist. They have read and believed in every single thing Qur'an says. They have started a war upon the Non-Islamic religions and they would even kill the Muslims who do not abide the rules.
So there are terrorists but not all the Muslims are terrorists.
Stereotyping is very harmful and if that is a terrorist group, people should blame THAT GROUP.
When will the world be clear of this idea?

PLUS most of the conservative Muslims are illiterate and they easily believe the terrorist groups, when they say "We kill the infidels and this is what god wants" I fear there is no solution to religious fights, since people are afraid of going to hell, in extreme measures.

I'm not bad mouthing Islam to gain views, I'm doing it because I don't believe in it and especially hate it.
I'm from Turkey, not an extreme country in applying the Islamic rules ALTOGETHER.
It's true that I don't know much but I hate it when people say Muslims are terrorist. My grandmother is not a terrorist, for example.
I'm putting the answers on vote. Thanks everybody for sharing your views =)

hey hey , slow down do not think that by bad mouthing your own religion and damning it without knowing it , you will gain some brawny points on the contrary , we only respect those who stick to their roots and defend their point of view . i am a Jew who red quran , and you know something it is the most coherent and complete book of life i have ever red. i am not going to convert , but i red it . women in Islam are given the right to keep their name after marriage , women in Islam are given the right to treated equally to their spouse.
what you have been faced with probably , is a negative social experience in those countries, this religion protected women and protected their children.
you are not aware of what it holds , this religion is a religion of harmony and it provides you with a clear cut on healthy living . quarn has explained so many things about inheritance, about aids , about sexual relationships and how it should be organized .
as for terror , you are quite wrong , calling any sect of society that opposes the USA would be called terrorist county or religion .
remember Russia and the soviet union , they were called f%#$king commies .
you are misinformed , i recommend your Read more and learn more .
take it form an American Jew , i have studied this book and red several times , and every time i read it , it amazes me .
Islamic soicties , unforutnantliy are run by those who are not true muslim in the sense they promote a number of thoughts and ideas that are in the true heart and soul of this religion.
the fact most of those nations are cultutlry weak and are opned to secular nations , got them confused ..
in islam , i red this " those who are not of my religion , they have thier own and i have mine " a statment that promots tolterance . you do not know what you are saying , so slow down , put down the heavy artiliary and think before you say things that are totaly untrue .
AND IF YOU DO NTO LIKE GENERALIZATION , YOU SHOULD NOT , YOU KNOW WHY , BECAUSE YOU ARE AN ATHISTE MEANING YOU ARE NOT MUSLIM SO CHILL OUT

Not all Muslims are bad people, there are some truly wonderful people who are honest, ethical, and loving, who are Muslims. That said, the unfortunate truth is that the Islamic terrorists in the world practice a form of Islam much closer to what Muḥammad practiced than anyone else.
The schizophrenia in Islam comes from the response Muhammad had to being ejected from Mecca. Prior to that event, he preached a religion of love and tolerance, and those verses are still part of the Koran. Unfortunately, instead of wiping the dust off his feet when the Meccans did not accept his teaching and forced him out of the town (as Jesus instructed us to do), he assembed an army and started raiding caravans. The suras written in Medina, and after, spell out a distinctly militant religion, bent on subjagating everyone else. It is this part of the religion that modern Islamic terrorists use to justify their outrageous actions.
The only solution is for the "good" Muslims to realize that the religion itself teaches this evil, and to abandon it by converting to Christianity*, Buddhism, or some other truly peaceful religion (or even secular humanism, which generally teaches respect and tolerance for all). Islam itself is just too broken, given the flawed nature of the man who started it all.
*While individual Christians, even as high ranking as Popes, have tought intolerance and hate through the years, the founder of the religion, Jesus Christ, never did any such thing. Neither did his disciples. It is telling that the Christian version of martyrdom means being killed without lifting a hand; the Islamic version means taking as many others with you as you can.

Unfortunately, as long as religion exists there will always be generalizations about people of a specific belief.
It is intrinsic in human nature to order and classify things. We try to define and delineate different things to create "order". The way things are defined and classified are based on their different characteristics. Additionally, people want to feel better about themselves and feel superior to others. They use these same characteristics to define themselves as being in a better group.
Since the beginning of time there has been this problem, whether it be religion/faith, race/skin color, country/flag or even just baseball teams (look at Yankees and Red Sox fans). One group declares war on on another for these differences or tries to convert the others so they are all conforming to the same set of rules.
For people to lump Muslims and the Islamic faith with terrorists is of course stereotyping and is wrong. It is a specific group of people that is using that religion as the reason for them doing what they do. Most of them have not read the Qu'ran, but rather are just brainwashed into those beliefs by someone else. Instead of forming those beliefs themselves, someone else has put them on the path towards that specific set of beliefs (check out the movie Syriana - its rather interesting on how these "radicals" develop).
For people to say that Muslims or Islam is the problem - that is very uneducated. If you look at the other religions you would find equal number or even more conflicts and wrongdoings done in the name of religion. For example, Christianity lead to the multiple Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition and the Salem witch trials. Can any of these be determined to be any more just or right than what the Islamic Jihadists are doing today (after all is jihad not the same as a crusade)?
As long as different people have different characteristics, there will be discrimination and stereotypes. The best way to combat this is education. Only by educating people about the differences and teaching people to be able to form their own educated opinions after researching and looking at the facts will this improve. Continued education about tolerating and accepting the differences in people, not the preaching of homogeneity, is the key to removing stereotyping and prejudice.

I do not believe that you live in a Muslim country as an atheist, unless you are visiting from a very "progressive" European country. I know many Muslim women in the United States who are happy with their lot in life and do not feel oppressed or demeaned, even living among so-called non-oppressed women. I believe you have set up a scenario from your living room without being aware of what is really going on.
The majority of Muslims do not live like they have no religion. Their entire social structure is based on the Quran.
So, I believe you think you are very clever in devising a way to belittle the Muslims while wearing the costume of an open-minded person.

I believe we have been very careful in the west NOT to stereotype all Muslims. We have repeated the phrase over and over again that "not all Muslims are terrorists--it is only a small percentage".
However, at the same time, it is true at this time in history that 99.99999999999 percent of all terrorists ARE Muslim. That is a fact. It is also true that the small percentage of terrorists represent a LARGE number of individuals. It is time for moderate Muslims to start speaking out against the terrorists.

True , most Muslims just want to be left alone and live in peace.
Sad thing is , when the shooting starts they're caught in the middle.
The muslim religion must start policing it's own or suffer along with the guilty .

I hate with a passion the terrorists and radicals who claim that 'God told them to do this' I completely understand why there are hate crimes and discrimination towards people (I) who practice it. The terrorists are miserable horrid scum who incorporate the religion with what they're doing..thus making the WHOLE Muslim pop. look bad because, whatever you see on telly, you believe.

The generalization of all Islams will coutinue because theirs alot of ignorant people in this country. They don't care to understand the difference between a average Muslim and a radical. And that attitude is justified by our own dumb president who uders worlds like,"Islamic Facist".

What PROOF do you have that Islamic Terrorists exist? Have you seen them, in person? Have you even seen a credible film of Islamic Terrorists? I haven't.
What I have seen though, is a U.S. government attack on the American people that they blamed on Islamic Terrorists and then I've seen credible video of how my own government has attacked Afghanistan, Iraq and getting ready to start some $hit with Iran.
There is NO credible evidence that Islamic Terrorists exist. Sorry, but nothing more than WORDS have been spewed. And they have come from the mouths of known liars like the Bush Family and the bought and paid for media.
I am not Islamic and I do not particularly care for Middle Eastern people, but I can spot lies and our government and media is lying to us.
