It can be, or it can be the truth. It all depends on what's going on at the time. If I'm hanging out with a woman and it's not really something I wish to pursue any further, but feel she's getting more attached than I'm comfortable with I might say something similar.

I dated a guy for 3 years who warned me not to fall in love with him but we kept seeing each other until he decided to "let me go so I could find someone who'd love me". He promptly married someone else in a distant country that he barely knew and to my knowledge he never did get to bring her home (4 years ago).

well what if you're real good friends...then you start to like each other...you go on a date. it works, and you start to fall for him...he says this...what if he has something (disease, terminal illness) that would prevent him from being there for you or having your heart broken if you loved him?
