Early morning you can use top water lures such as a jitterbug or buzz bait, as the day goes on switch to underwater bait like soft plastic worms or live bait such as night crawlers or minnows.

The best bass baits of all time are the Culprit Worm, 7.5" long, in June Bug color. Rig this texas style, with a 3/8 ounce weight and a 2/0, maybe a 3/0 hook (3/0 can be said as "three ought"), and just bounce it slowly around beds and what-have-you...
Then there's the Zoom Baby Brush hog, in Pumpkin Seed color.
Texas rig this, only without any weight, and just kinda slowly twitch it in the same areas you would use the Worm in for more of a middle depth/surface approach.
Then there's the Rapala Original Floating Minnow, The best colors I have found being the original black and white, and the black and gold. Just drag this around the outside of weedlines, careful not to lose them they're not that cheap, and hold on.
In between those 3 lures, big live worms, and live shiners (like a large minnow), I don't see how you could go wrong as a novice fisherman (assuming that you are, I don't know).
