It is the master word of summoning used to invoke the power of benevolent angels, according to The Sacred Writings of Abramelim the Mage, of which I have a copy.
The book theorizes that one can summon good angels to perform tasks, as well as the far riskier bad ones (demons), but the task had better be fit for the angel to perform.
The chant begins with abrakadabra, and drops a final letter with each invocation, until there are no more left. There are other requirements to these magics, including unflinching devotion to God. B.

It actually comes from America, with an interesting history.
People who were ill with fever or something of that sort would write on a peice of paper, 'abracadbra,' over and over again taking away one letter each day. They would then toss it in a river, and by then their illness would be gone!
Of course, since flu and fever go away if you wait, they would have recooparated by themselves, thinking it was the words that did it.
Hope that helps! =]

Someone told me it was ancient hebrew and meant 'the father, the son and the holy spirit', not really certain because Oxford cites the origin as unknown, check en.wikipedia.org and do a search, you'd probably find something..

It is a palindrome, I.E. a word that can be spelled backwards and sound the same. In ancient times, such things were considered magical. Another one is "Madam Im Adam"
