They slim ones with very colorful and attractive bodies are the GUYS. Those with stout bodies and a drab look, usually dull-colored, are Gals. Also males have a modified ventral fin called gonopodium which looks like a tiny straw which is for obvious reasons.

It's pretty simple. males have the long flowing tails and dorsal fins and are brightly colored. females are usually less well colored and have rounded tails and dorsal fins. The females will have a dark spit on their abdomen. Also males have a fin on the abdomen that is long and slender, the gonopodium, and it is used to fertilize the female.
