Febrezze doesn't help, neither does vinegar.

You will have to get it steam cleaned. Trust me, I got lots of stuff from my mothers home when she died, and ten years later, I can still smell it on some items.

Nothing you can do will help. You need to call pros and tell them it is cigarette smoke and they can clean/treat it to eliminate the odor. Some times if it is really bad, they can't even extract the odor totally.
Get a professional you know from someone who has used them before. You can't trust many of these people and the chemicals they use to do the job. You don't want them to come in, spray the couch and charge you $100.00 for that. Check on their warranty. That will also depend on the condition of the couch.

Cigarette smoke kills furniture too!!

Call a company that cleans smoke damage after fires. I believe they will be able to help you more than a regular professional steam cleaner. I would think that STEAMing a couch would make the smell worse. The heat and water would draw more of the smell out and make it more obvious.

Try a baking soda based cleanser. Otherwise, the "leave it outside for a few days" is what you might have to do to let it air out. You said Febreze doesn't work, but it might if you literally soak the couch in the stuff. Otherwise, ditch the couch... some charity would probably take it off your hands and pick it up for free. Your mom might not be too pleased, but if its making you gag...

Rent a rug doctor with attachments. Make sure they give you the directions as well. Follow the exact instructions in cleaning upholstry, including the shampoo. Put a fan on it to make sure it is moisture free. Usually the rug doctor does a pretty good job of getting all the moisture out. Follow-up with the Febreeze. That'll do it.

Either rent or hire someone to come in & steam clean the couch.
If this doesn't work you may want to consider scrapping the couch because the cost of continuing to clean it may equal or exceed the cost of a new couch.

I go with the professional steam cleaning, and ask him to use the same product they use for getting rid of pet odors. A stink is a stink.

I dought you can get the smell out, it probably goes all the way through, if you have a place you can air it for a very long time without sun fadeing, are something crowling into it, smell might finally go away,
Good Luck.
