OK. I get called an emo a lot, so I may know what Im talking about. Emo music, such as most people know it, is often the toned down version of a bands song, because their record company has persuaded them to go mainstream, and therefore bring in more money. Most people havent heard a lot of emo music, and dont know what their talking about. SO whats really popular is a sorta emotional rock that resembles emo in some ways, but is not. Try buying albums by bands like Jimmy Eat World, Taking Back Sunday, and the My Chemical Romance album. That will give you a basic idea. And if you want a simple answer to your question, its because it rocks.

it's not! it's just that no band could possibly sing emotional lyrics without being emo that's crazy talk. the majority of bands that deny being emo are labelled emo because people worry so much about stereotypes now.

Emo music is emotionally charged punk music. Preteens and teens love it. And when preteens and teens love it, it becomes popular. Look at Britney Spears.

because people can sometimes relate to the lyrics when they're feeling down
i know that if i feel down i like to listen to emo music because the fact that other people are feeling the same makes you feel better
i know some of it is 'screamo' which means that it's very shouty, but other bands are quite mellow and help to make people feel better when depressed

teenagers can relate to the lyrics, its pop, which they find easy to listen to and has a punk rebelliousness which the little s**ts can relate to when they're pissed off with their rich parents.
