if you have a USB 2.0 port, use that.

Are you using USB ports on the front of the PC? Those are usually slower than the ports on the back of the PC.

When you plug your HD into the socket, do you get a 'Hi-speed device plugged into a slow USB port' type message?

Its basically cause you're using 1.1, its causing it to not respond.

You could also use a firewire port if your PC has one of those.

USB1.1 is hardly suitable for large backups. 40GB?? those are not large files... Those are HUGE files! Never saw one...

I'd advice to do a scandisk of your system first; you may have corrupt files/folders (since: normally, files don't get that big). Installing an alternative OS, or reinstalling the current OS, might help.

It sounds like you need to upgrade to USB 2.0. If necessary go buy a USB 2.0 card to put into your PC.
