It turns its-self off for no reason!! It sometimes starts off...but usually turns off after the disk cheack during start up
either that or on the rare occasion it starts up it freezes
or the screen goes stupid!!

That is usually a problem with the battery. I had the same problem,and at the moment am running without the battery attached.
Remove the battery and try to boot up on the power pack only.

IF you have the CD For the Copy of Windows, Just do a repair Install. And the Computer would repair itself.
And Log on to www.support.microsoft.com for answers for all computer related information and troubleshooting steps.

Check the air vents aren't clogged up with fluff, especially if you ever rest it on a fabric surface while you use it. Rest it on a plastic tray instead.
And the advice about the battery sounds good.

Do the same thing I did to fix mine...SMASH IT OVER MY KNEE AND BUST IT IN TWO!!!! THEN CARVE GASHES INTO THE SCREEN WITH A KNIFE AND SHOVE A SCREWDRIVER UP THE FLOPPY DISK DRIVE!!
