Well, let's put it this way.

All the motorsports, in the world, combined, give out less pollution than a jumbo-jet crossing the Atlantic Ocean.

well, the FIA is thinking towards making future F1 cars 'green'. Thats a step in the right direction.

However, I wont say F1 contribute as much carbon as the races in the United States alone. In Nascar, there are more teams than there are in F1 while the drivers do more laps than in F1. Moreover, there are 18 races in atypical F1 calendar, have you counted how many there are in Nascar?

Considering the above, I bet you'll see that F1 isnt as bad as the other stock car racing.

The development that goes into F1 eventually makes street cars more efficent, so the overall carbon footprint of F1 is less than nil.
