I'm a bit stunned by some of the answers. Why spend £500 or more on a pc then neglect to spend £15 on a power surge protector with modem protector? You plug the surge protector into the wall socket, then plug everything for the pc into that. You can get 4 or 6 gang (sockets) plus modem protection. You can also get a more expensive version with a rechargeable battery in case of mains power failure or power dip - on average it happens twice a day!
Try Staples or Amazon or any pc store.
Apart from the risk of a power surge or dip, static can cause problems so if the storm is right overhead then it might be a good idea to unplug. I had my bios reset twice, once by a dip in the power supply when I booted (what are the chances of that!) and once by a storm.

if everything including your modem is in a surge protector u should be alright but i had a modem fried because lightning struck near my apt and i did not have the modem in a surge protector..so basically it is a long shot that anything will happen but to be safe unless u want repair bill or no puter u should , but just turning it off doesnt do anything u would have to unplug it..
