Can Americans freely own guns, chose their doctor, change jobs and move about the country freely?
Examine those limitations in the countries you mentioned.

I am an American, white and I live in China. I do not see any difference here in the amount of freedom, yes there is a bit of restriction in freedom of speech but not much. I go where I want and do what I want within the confines of the law. One major difference is the relative safety that I enjoy here...I could walk the streets at any hour without fear, and I have never been asked to show ID. The idea of American freedom is over-played.

The only thing I can think of is that the US has no mandatory military service (yet!), but Germany does. Aside from that, citizens of these countries enjoy the same freedoms that are enjoyed by citizens of the US.

They are not more free by any means! In fact it is the most repressed country I have ever been to! You watch the news and it is so censored and trashy its ridiculous. The bias in the media is so great that I believe it to be a repression tool to tell people that they are free. Such as religion saving our souls when really it is just opium for the masses. (I'm not overly Marxist but never a truer phrase has been said)
It really is not true that America has more freedom of expression etc. Nothing is allowed in America that is not allowed here. (from my experience)

Here's another question- Is USA against the World the next thing after Liberal vs GOP. :)
And as for the expense factor... Russia is way cheaper than most european countries in everything... Yet, I'd hardly call it free!
In fact, the more really poor people have, the cheaper things are. Hmm, you say that USA is cheap, then?

As You Like It answered your question very well, as did some others. There is not much to add. I just wanted to say that I think this is a very good question and Americans need to ask it to themselves more often. And maybe people from other countries might realise that Americans aren't as 'in-the-know' as they would believe them to be. This is due to not being fully or honestly informed along with the close-mindedness of many people.

it`s funny most of the people who answered are not american but each made a good point. first theConstitution and Bill of Rights, set us apart second we dont have mandatory military service though, we did it is called the draft and on an americans 18th b-day they have to still regester for it. ( in case we need more men to die in a war i hate war) thier is more money in the usa but it belongs to the bussines world, most american people have no more money than those in the UK we do have more freedom in what we see well we are suposed too but i realy dont think that is the case. i am sure thier is more to be said about this but i will let my american brothers and sisters say it i leave you now with the words of two of the greatest americans to ever live.

I agree with Melissa. Also this is an interferring government speed cameras, road tolls, soon to be black box to not only charge us for driving but will know our every movement. Nothing about safety, just revenue raisers. The uk is fast becoming a nanny state.

It's not.If you dare to criticise Bush you can expect a visit from the fbi & asked to explain yourself, you can lose your job,as has happened to a lot of people. You also get death-threats,look what happened to the Dixie Chicks.America under Bush is little short of being a police State.Do you know that under the Patriot Act,the fbi can enter your home when you are out, search it ,& not tell you.?You wouldn.t know they had been there.Land of the Free?
