Well, I teach communication skills for a living, so here goes.
One of the primary purposes that human beings communicate with one another is to "build bridges" and establish rapport with the speaker. As the listener, the best thing you can do to accomplish this objective is to paraphrase what the speaker says rather than adding your own perspective. If you accurately rephrase what the other person says and then add, "Is that correct?" or "Is that what you mean?" they will mostly likely brighten up and say, "Yes! That's exactly how I feel/or what I meant!" Now you have a friend, not an enemy.

Don't express your own point of view if it is contrary unless you are invited to do so. Otherwise, you are ASKING for a verbal conflict.

There are only four ways that people interact with one another. When you meet someone, listen carefully. Within five minutes, you'll know their communication orientation and whether or not you want to interact with them.

1. Relaters/cooperators--Hear your story, paraphrase it, add their own similar experience to establish rapport.

2. Competition orientation--Hear your story, hear it as a challenge, add their own story as a form of one upmanship.

3. Controllers--Hear your story, interrupt you, switch the topic to one of their own interest.

4. Non-relaters--don't know how to relate to the human race. Are generally suspicious of everyone. Users and loners fall into this category. They will be searching for the hidden meanings and lies when you are talking. These types of people will always misinterpret your innocent intentions, so just walk away and avoid them.

Does that help?
