One of the best things about Australia is that you can come at any time of year.
In the winter months you can spend time in the Northern Territory and Queensland as the weather is beautiful, then work your way south.
My idea of travelling is to stay in a place I really like to get to know the locals and what their lifestyle is really like.
Jumping from town to town you see a lot but don't learn much.

I wanted to go diving on the Great Barrier Reef, so I went in October before it got too hot and before the box jellies arrived. The weather was wonderfu, and there was a lot to see and do there. Then I went southward, Sydney (you can just go there and stay....it's amazing), then Melbourne, Perth, and New Zealand. It was wonderful...I wish I'd be able to stay more than 2 months, but....

Winter is best for the northern regions of Australia (Darwin, Broome, Kimberleys, Cairns, Townsville, Alice Springs), but otherwise autumn (March to May) is good.

If you head down to Tasmania, stick to travel in summer. It can snow on Mt Wellington (Hobart) even at Christmas!

Australia is a huge continent so the best way to see it is to have lots of time up your sleeve.

time of year depends on what places you want to visit, and what temperatures you're used to.
if you want to visit all over Australia, the best months to visit are probably september/october, as its not too cold in the southern states, but not too deathly hot in the north.
australia differs so much from state to state, with the outback, beaches, forests, mountains etc, so its best to travel around
i suggest the best way to see australia, if you want to see a lot of it, is to hire a car from a few capital cities and venture out yourself, but be careful with restrictions etc, and this option is often expensive. if you only want to travel a small distance, queensland has everything - rainforests, beaches, cities, outback etc, and is one of the cheaper states, and one of the prettiest

last year i visited new zealand on the south island via a tour group. some folks in that group had also been to australia. they said that nz was much more pretty and enjoyable than the trip prior to australia. it is a land of extremes and lots of poison critters, snakes and spiders and deserts etc, but nz is a beautiful place. should you reconsider, i am sure you will be satisfied.
